What is Hakone known for?
Hakone is one of the most popular spots for tourists looking to make a day-trip from Tokyo, and in my opinion Onshi-Hakone Park is the best spot in Hakone for photos. Hakone is famous for onsens (hot springs), ryokan (Japanese style hotels), cultural sites, and beautiful nature views. But because of this, Hakone can get really busy. Like, really, really busy. Which is all fun and games unless you have decided to escape the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. So if you have come to get back to nature but still want cute photos of Hakone’s gems, Onshi-Hakone Park is it.
Where is the Best Spot in Hakone for Photos?
It is called Onshi-Hakone Park, and it is a not-so-hidden, but very under ultilised, gem of Hakone. Gorgeous views of Hakone’s cultural icons? Check. Silence and your own space? Check. Lush greens and flowers? Check. Free? Check! This is what makes Onshi-Hakone Park the best spot in Hakone for photos If this all sounds like your cup of tea, keep reading!
What is there to do at Onshi-Hakone Park?
Check Out The Views of Lake Ashi
Onshi-Hakone Park, at its highest point, gives you sweeping views of many of the famous sites Hakone is known for. As you walk through the trails up to the observation deck (弁天の鼻展望台), you get glimpses of the beautiful Lake Ashi through the trees. We packed ourselves a picnic and sat at the observation deck.
You can see the pirate themed boat moving over the water as well as the beautiful red torii gate of Hakone Jinjya Heiwa-no-Torii. You can even see Mt Fuji from Onshi-Hakone Park on a clear day!
Wander the Trails
There are scenic ‘hiking’ trails that wrap around the coast and cliff of Onshi-Hakone Park. They are all stunning, so I recommend you just throw caution to the wind and pick a path to explore. The mossy staircase (二百階段) is a must see. Just be careful of hornets, they’re a big problem in Japan.
These are all nicely maintained walking paths so you do not need to fear getting stuck. The Moto Hakone path (草花の丘) leads to the old military check-point, Hakone Tokaido Checkpoint, which is a nice little prize for your all your hard work. The convenience of the location to other scenic sights is another reason why Onshi-Hakone Park is the best spot in Hakone for photos. There are some little stores as well where you can get a treat after your big walk!
Get Back to Nature
We went at the end of sakura (cherry blossom) season which meant that the blossoms lined the trails and spring flowers had just started to come out.
This park has a range of different flora and fauna. From the dense, tree-lined trails that line bottom of the cliff to the sun-touched, manicured park grounds at the old palace at the top – you will be able to find something to inspire. We managed to spot a few different mushrooms!
There is also an area by the pond for wisteria, but it was not in bloom when we went.
Visit the Palace
Hakone Rikyū (Hakone Palace) was once the summer house of the imperial palace, but now it is open for the public. There is also a lovely big, covered seating area out the front to sit, people watch, or draw. If you want to know more about the history and layout of the Palace, the official website has some information in English over here.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Onshi-Hakone Park for photos?
I recommend early spring as the weather is still crisp which gives beautiful views. The warm weather tends to make things a little hazy, so you might not be able to take good photos of the views.
In terms of the time of day, Onshi-Hakone Park is really rather large and not so touristy, so any time of the day is fine to come and you should not find parking or space an issue.
The park is also free and does not close.
However, if the views are your main driver for coming, traveling here during the colder months and avoiding mid-day are your best bets for gorgeous, clear views.
How do you get to Onshi-Hakone Park?
The easiest way to get here is by car, as the park has ample parking available. If you are not coming by car, it is about 10-15 minutes from either Moto-Hakone or Hakone-machi station as it is basically smack bang in the middle of them.

VERDICT
Is Onshi-Hakone Worth A day-trip from Tokyo?
Yes, definitely, yes! This was one of our favourite day trips. If you have been to Hakone you will know that it gets quite busy – especially around the train station and souvenir stores. If you are looking to take photos of the views, then Onshi-Hakone Park is the best spot there is. I think I left a little piece of my heart here.
