Best Vegan Restaurants In Tokyo: Feast Like A Local

From Vegan Karaage to Japanese Crepes: Its All Here

After living in Tokyo for many years and visiting some fantastic (and not so fantastic) attempts at vegan food, I’ve put together a list of the best vegan restaurants in Tokyo. While Japan is known for its traditional cuisine that includes meat and fish, more people have become aware of the ethical, environmental, and health benefits (unless you’re hitting the vegan karaage) of plant-based diets.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of vegan cafes, restaurants, and shops in Tokyo, offering a range of vegan foods and products. These establishments are catering to the growing demand for healthy vegan options. Below you’ll find my personal favourite, taste-tested vegan cafes and restaurants in Tokyo! Visiting Japan and ready to plan your trip? Check out my blogs on Japan.

Most of the vegan restaurants are situated in areas popular with expats and tourists.

Vegan food in Tokyo izakaya masaka
Vegan Karaage at Izakaya Masaka.

Izakaya masaka

This is my personal favourite (which is why I put it first in the list of best vegan restaurants in Tokyo) as it really has that grungy izakaya aesthetic that you travel to Japan for. With a menu including vegan karaage, you’ll be feeling like a jaded salaryman in no time!

2024 update: I went here recently and maybe it was just an off day but the food definitely wasn’t as good as it used to be. However, you still get the awesome izakaya vibe which is rare to find alongside vegan food in Tokyo. Just keeping it honest!

Where To Find Izakaya Masaka:

Location: 15-1 Udagawacho, Shibuya City, Tokyo 〒150-0042, Japan

T’s Tantan

If you visit Tokyo, you have got to visit T’s Tantan. Not only is it right there at Narita Airport (Terminal 2, Main Building, 4th Floor) waiting for you when you get off your plane, but it is definitely one of the best vegan restaurants in Tokyo. At this point you’re probably wondering if I’m aware that Narita is in Chiba, not Tokyo. They also have a location in Tokyo Station, so if you’re catching a shinkansen or coming from Haneda you needn’t miss out on this epic tantanmen. I recommend grabbing a katsu-sando for the train, too!

2024 update: T’s Tantan instant noodles are available at select Natural Lawson and they have opened a new location in Ueno. It is becoming one of the most popular vegan restaurants in Tokyo!

Where To Find T’s Tantan:

Ain Soph

Ain Soph crawled so other vegan cafes in Tokyo could walk. The great thing about Ain Soph is the restaurant has a few different locations, all of which feature a different theme. There is Ain Soph Ripple in Shinjuku which focuses on delicious fried foods and burgers, then there is Ain Soph in Ginza which boasts a patisserie.

2024 update: All three of Ain Soph branches are still open, offering a range of different vegan food in Tokyo for you to try!

Falafel bros

A small corner shop with limited room to eat, but still worth a visit if you’re in the Roppongi area. The great thing about Falafel Bros is that you can choose your pita salad ingredients.

2024 update: Falafel bros has closed its Ebisu branch but has opened a new branch near Tokyo Station.

Superiority burger

Hands down the best vegan burgers in all of Tokyo. Superiority Burger are vegan burger masters! Do not be deterred by a somewhat hidden location, you’ll be greeted with a fabulous menu and delicious food.

2024 update: Superiority Burger is currently closed but hopefully it will reopen soon because it was some of the best vegan food in Tokyo!

Wired bonbon has a completely vegan dessert menu that includes french toast and parfaits, making it one of the best vegan restaurants in Tokyo. It is the place to get delicious, kawaii sweets. Mos Burger is the McDonalds of Japan. Known for their tiny-sized burger, you’ll be pleased to learn they have their own vegan one. It is hard to miss as it is called the Green Burger, because it is, well, green. They also have snack packs including onion rings and fries that are vegan-friendly!

Where To Find Mos Burger:

Location: literally everywhere.

Nataraj

Nataraj has two locations but my personal favourite is the Harajuku location as you get views which are perfect for people watching. Although Nataraj is a vegetarian restaurant, but they have plenty of vegan options.

Mr Farmer

Tokyo is slim-picking when it comes to vegan options, which is the only reason I am putting Mr. Farmer on the list. Mr. Farmer is a reflection of what veganism is in Japanese culture – portrayed through the organic aesthetic which has a dedicated diet lifestyle following. Expect an array of salads, mushroom burgers, and herb-infused water. People rave about it, so I guess give it a try?

2024 update: Mr. Farmer has closed two of its locations in Ebisu and Shinjuku but it is still open in Harajuku, Komazawa, and Hibiya. You’re probably noticing a bit of a trend with vegan restaurants in Tokyo – they are ever-changing!
