What is avocado on toast?
Avocado on toast (also known as avocado toast, smashed avocado.. or avo if you’re a freak) is a staple of any Melbourne cafe menu. There is one thing Australians can all agree on – and that is every Saturday and Sunday should involve an 11am (sometimes boozy) brunch. I love Australian brunch culture, it is so strong here that it is easy to find beautifully designed cafes and the standards of food and coffee is very high as the competition to have the best cafe is fierce.

Here you will find my personal favourites (all tried and tested by yours truly) in Melbourne, Australia. And the best part is – they’re all vegan! Although not all the restaurants are vegan-only, they all offer a range of plant-based options including avocado on toast. If you’re traveling in Australia, make sure you check out my other blogs.
Monk Bodhi Dharma
Recommended For: vegan cheese topping
OK this is my favourite place for vegan avocado on toast in Melbourne. Monk Bodhi Dharma has a vegetarian and vegan option for their avocado on toast. The vegan option includes a delicious crumbly vegan cheese. Make sure you also get a chai – they are also the best!
Love Madre
Recommended For: balsamic lovers
Love Madre is my go-to vegan cafe in Melbourne. All of their food is 100% plant based and their menu includes so many tasty options it is hard to choose just one. The avocado on toast has a delicious balsamic dressing. They also sell a range of bread and bakery goods for you to take home.
Plain Sailing
Recommended For: avocado lovers
Plain Sailing has a vegetarian and vegan option for their avocado on toast. My favourite thing about their avocado on toast is that they give you SO much avocado. This also includes a beet hummus on the side which goes so well with the avocado.
Sister of Soul
Recommended For: A little bit of everything
Sister of Soul is my local cafe and they make amazing food. They have vegan and vegetarian options and the smashed avocado is fabulous. They make it like I would make it at home if I wasn’t such an incapable chef – so it has that comfortable, homey feel about it. It is my go-to on a laid-back weekend when I want comfort food and I’m too lazy to make it.
