The Best European Cities to Visit for Art Lovers

Why Europe is a great place for artists

There are so many beautiful European cities to visit for art. Europe’s allure for artists lies in its incredible blend of history, culture, and artistic diversity. From ancient architecture, to vibrant art scenes, the continent offers a treasure trove of inspiration. The iconic history along with the chance to connect with fellow artists from around the world creates an environment where creativity can flourish. And most importantly, it is appreciated.

What you will find here

On this blog you’ll find my favourite cities in Europe to visit to see amazing art and architecture, with some suggestions of what to look for and where to go. These are all places I’ve personally been to! So why does my opinion matter? I’m an artist myself, ex-art teacher, and avid traveller, so I kind of know what I’m talking about.

Vienna

Vienna, in my opinion, is one of the best places to see art in Europe. If you’re wondering where to see art in Vienna, don’t miss the stunning Belvedere Palace, home to a remarkable collection of Austrian art, including Gustav Klimt’s iconic “The Kiss.” The Vienna State Opera is a must-visit for its grand architecture and world-class performances.

Stroll through Schönbrunn Palace (you can read about why I love it here), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to immerse yourself in imperial history. And be sure to explore the Albertina Museum for an impressive array of graphic art, and works from Dürer to Monet. You can also find Egon Schiele at Leopold Museum. Thinking about visiting Vienna? I’ve written all about why you’ll fall madly inlove with Vienna.

Florence

When in Florence, you must visit the Uffizi Gallery, which houses an incredible collection of Renaissance masterpieces, including works by Botticelli (you’ll find Birth of Venus here), Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci. The Galleria dell’Accademia is home to Michelangelo’s iconic statue of David, but you can also find a replica in the town square (Duomo Square) and Piazzale Michelangelo.

The Florence Cathedral, or Duomo, is not only a marvel of architecture but also home to remarkable frescoes, including Vasari’s Last Judgement in the dome (which includes a lot of stairs – but is very much worth it!). Lastly, don’t forget to explore the Pitti Palace, where you can admire art in opulent Medici surroundings and wander through the beautiful Boboli Gardens.  Planning to visit Florence? I’ve put together a 3 day itinerary.

You probably haven’t heard me talk about Paris much on my blog before and that is because, frankly, I don’t have many nice things to say about it. The one thing I do give Paris credit for is that it has some of the most iconic art in the world, and anyone who has any semblance of interest in art needs to experience this art haven.
