What to do in Kamogawa Chiba: Easy Tokyo Day Trip

Why should you visit Kamogawa?

Kamogawa Chiba is an area of the Chiba peninsula, only a short drive from Tokyo, Japan. That makes it the perfect day trip if you’re looking to get out of the city and explore. The best part about this peninsula is that it has very pleasant weather all year round, so it is the perfect place to escape the heat or the cold of the city!

What you will find here

In this post I will share my favourite spots to visit in Kamogawa that are perfect for taking photos. I’ve also included some of my own tips and tricks for getting there and some photos! I visited this area a couple of times while I lived in Tokyo and it was such a hidden gem. You won’t find many tourists in this area – just quiet towns, quaint villages, and a relaxed way of life.

Oyama Senmaida Rice Terrace

Why you should visit Oyama Senmaida Rice Terrace

Oyama Senmaida Rice Terrace is a traditional rice terrace located kind of in the middle of nowhere. You will need to get there by car as there is no nearby train station, unless you take the bus from Awa-Kamogawa Station to 大山千枚田入口 bus stop and walk (which is about 20 minutes walk). Depending on the time of the year, the rice terraces can be filled with water, flowers or even illuminated. We went during summer in the middle of the day and it was not too busy at all as it is a bit of a hidden gem!

Daibentenjima

Why you should visit Daibentenjima

Daibentenjima (大弁天島) is in Kominato (小湊) and is a very special, hidden gem in Japan. There is a red torii built into one of the rocks that are located on the coast and is walkable when the water is low. There is a newly built promenade that you can walk along from Awa-Kominato station (about a 30 minutes walk). As this location is one of Chiba’s best kept secrets, you’ll find that this place isn’t busy at all!

Why you should visit Tanjoji Temple

Tanjoji is an 18th-century Buddhist temple that is also located in Kominato so you can easily go to both Daibentenjima and Tanjoji. It is worth visiting because it features a grand wooden gate & rows of stone lanterns which is perfect for taking photos. Because it is a temple off the beaten path, you’ll only find a couple of locals there so it won’t be too busy at all.

VERDICT

Is Kamogawa Chiba worth a visit?

Kamogawa is not the most popular place for a day trip from Tokyo but it is worth it if you’re looking for something a little different. You’ll be one of the only tourists when you visit and it really does feel like you’re off the beaten path.
