Here Are Five Easy Day Trips From Melbourne, Australia

Is it possible to do a day trip to Victoria?

If you’re visiting the state of Victoria in Australia, here are five easy day trips from Melbourne that you’ll want to do to see everything that the area has to offer. The greater Melbourne area covers 9992.5 km2 and has a population of around 4.96 million. Unfortunately, Melbourne and Victoria do not have the best public transport so if you’re wanting to see the diverse landscapes, scenic coastal drives, and charming countryside that are on offer in the area they are best explored by car.

What you’ll find here: Five Easy Day Trips From Melbourne

I moved to Melbourne, Australia in 2021 and have been exploring Australia ever since. Here you’ll find my top five day trip options from Melbourne that will take you to the greater Melbourne area and beyond. Some are accessible by public transport but I would recommend driving for most of them as it will give you more independence when travelling.

Brighton Bathing Boxes

Best for: closest and accessible by public transport

The Brighton Bathing Boxes are a collection of traditional bathing boxes similar to what you would see at Brighton beach in England (but better imho). They’re painted in unique, colourful designs with some representing a part of Australian culture. It is a short walk from Brighton Station to Brighton Beach which is accessible by a 25 train ride from Flinders Station in the Melbourne CBD. If you’re interested in visiting this spot I put together a day trip guide to visiting Brighton Bathing Boxes.

Phillip Island

Best for: penguins and untouched beaches

Phillip Island is one of the most popular day trips from Melbourne as it features some of the most unique scenery and bird life in Victoria. It is only a 2 hour car ride from the Melbourne CBD. It is not accessible by bus or train but there are organised tours by Viator or Get Your Guide that will take you if you don’t drive (I use Rentalcars.com) . I highly recommend visiting to see the evening little penguin march which is a bucket-list experience. If you’re interested in visiting, I have a guide for Phillip Island that includes lots of unique ideas!

Mornington Peninsula

Best for: beaches and boutique shops

Mornington Peninsula is the ideal place to visit on a sunny day. It is a 1.5 hour drive to the point of the peninsula or a 3 hour bus and train ride (transfer at Frankston Station) but there are plenty of beaches and small, affluent towns along the way. I highly recommend stopping off at Sorrento and Portsea beaches to enjoy the crystal clear water. If you’re interested in visiting the Mornington Peninsula, I’ve put together a guide for a day trip!

Yarra Valley & Dandenong Ranges

Best for: vineyards and rolling hills

Yarra Valley is an excellent choice if you want to wine and dine yourself or get back in touch with nature. From wineries in Healesville to the heritage steam railway Puffing Billy to hiking in Dandenong Ranges, there really isn’t anything you can’t do in the Yarra Valley & Dandenong Ranges! It is only a 1.5 hour drive and some towns are connected by public transport, however if you would like to go hiking or get to a winery a tour or rental car (I use Rentalcars.com) might be the best option.

Daylesford

Best for: Autumn leaves and countryside cafes

Daylesford is known for being an affluent but quaint village full of heritage buildings and houses. It is a popular destination for those wanting to escape for the day from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne but still have their oat milk flat white and a farm to table free-range lunch at a gentrified pub. You’ll find beautiful parks that turn a beautiful orange and red during autumn here as well as boutique cafes and shops selling all of the most delicious treats you’ll need.

Although the township is accessible by a 2 hour train ride (you will need to transfer to a regional train line), it is recommended that you rent a car (I use Rentalcars.com) because most of the places you’ll want to visit in Daylesford and the surrounding park areas are not easily walkable.

VERDICT

Are day trips from Melbourne worth it?

I highly recommend you do at least one day trip while in Melbourne as you’ll be able to get more insight into this beautiful area and add some unique experiences to your trip!
