Best Locations in Melbourne for Beautiful Autumn Photos

Where are the best places to see autumn leaves in Melbourne?

Contrary to what you might have been told, Australia is not all sunshine and beaches! I’ve put together the best locations in Melbourne for beautiful autumn photos as autumn in Melbourne is a magical time that you won’t get to experience further north. Most of the autumn leaves start turning golden yellow and oranges all the way to red around the middle of April to May, depending on how warm or cold the season is.

What you will find here

Here you’ll find some of my favourite locations in Melbourne for beautiful autumn photos. These are all places that I have personally visited and love, so I hope you will too! Are you based in Melbourne and looking for something to see this autumn? These aren’t just all instagrammable famous locations, so who knows? You might find something special.

Fawkner Park

Fawkner Park is a park just behind South Yarra. It was founded in the 1860s so it is surrounded by Melbourne-style colonial homes. These days, the park is mostly used by children to play sports, but there is a beautiful archway near the off-leash dog area that is worth visiting. The park’s organised in a similar fashion to most Melbourne parks with large walkways cutting straight across the park and are lined with trees which all turn a gorgeous orange during autumn.

Treasury Gardens

Treasury Gardens is right in the CBD located between Parliament Station and Fitzroy Gardens. This makes it a really good location to visit to see Melbourne autumn leaves as it is easy to access if you’re staying in the city. There is a small pond and fountain area by the Victorian Emergency Services Memorial and John F Kennedy Memorial that is surrounded with autumn leaves.

Flagstaff Gardens

Flagstaff Gardens is right in the heart of the city so it is a smaller garden space than the others but never-the-less it is a great spot to experience autumn in Melbourne. However, if you’re on the north-eastern side of the city this might be the easiest park to get to. You can easily stroll around here in about 15 minutes and enjoy the red leaves. Just keep in mind that the nearby school uses this park during recess and lunch and the park is on a slight slope.

Carlton Gardens

Carlton Gardens is where you’ll find the Royal Exhibition Building and the Melbourne Museum. The main path from Victoria street towards the Royal Exhibition Building is the best place to see the golden autumn leaves in Carlton Gardens. There is a grand fountain right at the end which makes for great photos, too.

Fitzroy Gardens

Fitzroy Gardens is probably the best place to experience autumn in Melbourne. It is arranged with diagonal paths intersecting throughout the gardens. The main path from Cooks’ Cottage to the River God Fountain located at the top of Fitzroy Gardens is lined with trees that turn a gorgeous, yellow and orange colour in autumn. Just as a note, this is one of the more popular areas during autumn due to its proximity to popular areas like Fitzroy and Collingwood.

VERDICT

Melbourne is one of the best places to visit in Australia for autumn leaves

Not only is Melbourne super convenient to travel to (as you probably have other things on your list to see!) but it is the perfect place to enjoy the perfect sad girl autumn aesthetic. If you’re planning to go further out of Melbourne, I have lots of guides for all of Victoria and Australia to help you, too!
