The Best Val d’Orcia Views: Pienza – Towns of Tuscany

Why should you visit Pienza (& do you really need convincing?)

We visited Pienza in August while exploring Tuscany for the very first time. Pienza is a charming hilltop town nestled in the heart of Tuscany and is surrounded by rolling countryside so it is a must-see for breathtaking views of the Tuscan landscape. Pienza is celebrated for its historic significance and as the birthplace of Pope Pius II. As such, it is very popular for travellers because the town is well looked after and has kept its Tuscan charm.

What you will find here

You’ll hear many people defend Pienza as the “best village of Tuscany”. In my opinion, it isn’t the best, but it is really nice. So I’ll explain all you need to know about Pienza because you definitely need to go!

What Is there to do in Pienza?

Take photos Of The Best Val d’Orcia Views

There is a path around the edge of the town that has sweeping views of Tuscany. I highly recommend you go to the Punto Panoramico di Pienza viewing spot, which is just around the corner of the cathedral. This is where the best Val d’Orcia views are as it is on a sloping hill (it is also the spot you’ll see all over the gram!).

The staircase behind the cathedral has the most popular photo spot for the Best Val d'Orcia Views.

Wander the small alleys in Pienza

There is so much beautiful Renaissance architecture like the Palazzo Piccolomini. But wandering down the little alleyways and getting lost is something you must do, too!

The smaller lanes are not as busy and easier to take photos.

Grab a coffee and people-watch

I grabbed a coffee at Sperone Nudo which is right outside Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, Pienza’s cathedral. This is an awesome spot to people-watch and just enjoy the sights of Pienza.

What are the best vegan eats in Pienza?

I couldn’t find any vegan restaurants while in Pienza. If you’re looking for vegan food, I recommend sticking to bruschetta, olives, focaccia, and sundried tomatoes.

When is the best time to visit Pienza?

It also gets quite busy, so this is really one of the stops you want to visit early in the morning.

Mornings are less busy and the sun is not so harsh (especially important in summer!).

How do you get to Pienza?

I highly recommend driving around Tuscany as it will give you the ultimate freedom. There is a paid parking lot very close to the entrance of Pienza. It gets very busy during summer. When we were leaving at around 10am, it was full. If you don’t drive or do not want the pressure of driving on Italian roads, the next best option is to join a tour that will visit all the towns!

What are the best hotels to stay in Pienza?

You can stay in the town of Pienza! Find the best hotels, apartments, or b&b here.

Walking around the path that follows the edge of Pienza gives sweeping views. Imagine waking up to that?

VERDICT

You’ll regret not visiting Pienza when in Tuscany

In my opinion, Pienza is one of the best Tuscan towns so make sure you don’t miss out. This is the one that you see all over social media so it will be exactly what you dreamed of!
