Bagni San Filippo: The Hidden Hot Springs of Tuscany

Why should you visit Bagni San Filippo

Bagni San Filippo is a small village with hot springs that create calcium carbonate deposits, which form white concretions and waterfalls known as the White Whale – because it looks like a whale? We decided to go to Bagni San Filippo because we were staying in an agriturismo that was not too far from here and we were really wanting to experience a natural hot spring in Italy. This would be our only chance as we were pressed for time and would not be travelling down to Saturnia hot springs.

What you will find here

Here you’ll find my honest opinion about visiting Bagni San Filippo and if it was worth it. Was it my favourite stop in Tuscany? Definitely not. But let me explain why I still thought it was worth the visit (and why you should visit, too!).

Picture perfect but this is actually really uncomfortable. Stay safe, stick to the pools, and don’t climb the white whale!

What Is there to do in Bagni San Filippo?

Enjoy the hot springs!

The main reason to visit Bagni San Filippo is to enjoy the natural outdoor thermal baths. Make sure you trial all the small hot springs that form as pools in the woods because some are definitely warmer than others. I went in the middle of summer and still found these hot springs too cold for my liking. Yes, some are warmer than others but they’re not as warm as other natural hot springs I’ve experienced in Japan or New Zealand. I found myself freezing after about 30 minutes as the mornings in Tuscany are still quite cool, even in the height of summer.

This hot spring meanders down through the woods.
The waters are very clear and the white stones are stunning.

What are the best vegan eats in Bagni San Filippo?

I couldn’t find any vegan restaurants while in Bagni San Filippo (it is a very small town). If you’re looking for vegan food, I recommend sticking to bruschetta, olives, focaccia, and sundried tomatoes.

When is the best time to visit Bagni San Filippo?

We went to Bagni San Filippo at around 8am and there was only one other couple there. This meant that we had the whole place to ourselves! I would recommend getting there early as there are not a lot of parking spaces and the village is quite small.

If you get here early you can have the whole of Bagni San Filippo to yourself.

How do you get to Bagni San Filippo?

The best way to get to Bagni San Filippo is to drive as it is a little out of the way. There are coin operated car park spaces that line the entrance to the path that you will need to walk down to get to the baths. It is only about a 5 minute walk and it has a relatively flat path.

What are the best hotels to stay in when visiting Bagni San Filippo?

You can stay in the town of the hot springs town of Bagni San Filippo! Find the best hotels, apartments, or b&b here (there are only a few, so get in quick!).

It is really beautiful and worth a trip if only to enjoy for a few minutes.

VERDICT

Is Bagni San Filippo worth it?

Bagni San Filippo is a great bath to go to if it is your only option.

I would probably not return to Bagni San Filippo, but I’m glad that I went here because it was the only natural thermal bath that I had the chance to try during my trip through Tuscany. It is worth the experience of trying a natural hot spring in Italy but in the future I’ll try one of the bigger, more popular ones.
