What Kind of Teacher Are You? A quiz for teachers

After teaching for almost a decade I’ve met a range of teachers from amazing to downright inappropriate. It seems there are certain types of teachers that you’ll find in every school you go to. I didn’t want to keep this to myself, so I’ve made a fun BuzzFeed style personality quiz for you to find out what kind of teacher you are (and maybe if you should consider leaving teaching by now). Sure, this might be showing my age but they’re fun! Remember, this is just a bit of fun and I hope this resonates with you.

Why did you want to be a teacher? I wanted to show the world just how kind and giving I can be. I just love being around kids. I've been teaching for so long, I've forgotten. I wanted to become a teacher because kids are the future and I want it to be bright! I thought I'd be good at it (but I just feel like a failure!) Someone has to teach these students about God's word! I THOUGHT it would be a easy job with lots of holidays. School is my safe space. I just wanted to share all of my knowledge. I wanted to be a voice for the voiceless.

How have you decorated your classroom? With a few quotes from my favourite authors and theorists. With inspirational quotes and a shelf for my teaching awards and "#1 teacher" mugs. I let my students decide! With my Teachers Pay Teachers posters and Bible verses. Who cares? I spent all summer designing my room and I'm so proud of it! I don't decorate my classroom. Kids these days are too spoilt. With age-appropriate learning materials that are inclusive and promote diversity. With sign-up forms for the Boy Scouts. It is still on my to-do list!

It is time to get to work, what time are you arriving? 8am on the dot. Everyday. Every week. Every month. Every year. It depends on how long it takes me to skateboard there. I'm always early because I just love chatting with the other teachers in the morning about what a beautiful day I will have. Whenever my first class is. And maybe not even then. Early as I help at the School Breakfast Club Program I'll catch the school bus with the children. I got in early to read my book and enjoy a black coffee in peace. I try to get there 10 minutes early as I still haven't worked out how long it takes. On time if I can psych myself to get out of the car instead of just driving off and running away. Not until I've had my morning Starbucks Frappuccino after dropping my 5 kids off!

One of your students is having a bad day. How will you deal with the situation? A shoulder rub should make them feel better. Back in my day, a bad day meant going to war on an empty stomach. Get over it! Try and calm them down with some ASMR videos. Belittle them until they stay quiet (just make sure you secretly film it to put on the internet later for lols). This is above your pay grade. Put on a movie. You let them go home because they said that their parents said it was OK and that sounds right.... right? Help them, obviously! Subtly ask them if everything is OK then go back to your book. Have a good, long, cry with them. Life is hard. Talk about their problems to the whole class. I'm sure they'll love all the attention. That way, all the students will know how kind and helpful you are.

A student comes over to your desk to ask for help but you're on your laptop. What are you doing on there? Looking at a site the school should have blocked. It is turned off, I prefer pen and paper. Checking some words the students have been using on Urbandictionary.com Cold DMing people on Instagram about a new and exciting "business opportunity". Doom scrolling Indeed.com Re-ordering classroom supplies because the students stole them all. Replying to some important student emails, you like to provide timely feedback. Writing book reviews on Goodreads for books you only read the blurb for. Staring at my to-do list that is several pages long. Putting together a whole-staff email to share how much hard work your department does.

You've got a spare period. What are you doing? Chatting to teacher friends about how busy you have been. Checking in with some of your students that are falling behind so they can catch up. Wondering if it is time to retire. Trying a breathing technique your therapist told you about. Having a vape break out the back of the school. Going home (you might not come back). Rehearsing your next class and making sure the slides are just right! Trying to find dirt on that teacher you hate. Stand outside the classroom door and keep an eye on my students. Listening to a podcast about financial independence (even though you know it will never be you).

Reports are due tomorrow. How are you going? Obsessively looking over them and asking other teachers for advice. They've become the novel I never got to write. I've been watching the students closely all year so I know all about them. They're progress, their behaviour, their bedtime... I guess I'll do them instead of sleeping tonight... I've hand-written all my report cards of course! I've finished as I've been documenting student progress and providing feedback consistently all year. Wait - reports are due? I've almost finished writing about all the wonderful learning experiences I put together for these children! Even though I'm in a leadership role, I haven't written the ones I have to do. But everyone else better have them in on time OR ELSE! I'm giving everyone A's as I don't want to ruin my friendships with them.

It is the end of the school day, when are you leaving? As early as I can duck out without being seen by other staff. Immediately, I have to get home to my own kids, they're my world! It depends if any of the students take me up on the offer for a ride home. It depends, I don't play by the rules! I work 76 hours a fortnight as per the terms of my contract. A normal time. I've worked out a pretty good system to keep things balanced. Late, I like to spend time getting to know the other teachers. I'll probably stay late and I expect everyone else will, too. This isn't just a job, it is a calling. I have so much to catch up so I'll probably sleep under my desk. I don't have anywhere to go...

All the teachers are gathered in the staff room to chat before the after-school meeting. What do you do? After school meeting? As if. You slip out the back and go home. Hang out in the back on your phone, you don't really vibe with any of the other teachers. Gossip about that teacher you hate with your teacher friends. Offer to check the halls for any stray children. Make sure all the other teachers know they've been slacking recently. Observe and roll your eyes. Most of these people are idiots. Sit down for the first time today and drink your now-room-temperature coffee you didn't have time to drink in the morning and take a deep breath. Share some of your small wins of today. You like to keep it positive. It is about the kids, after all! Pull a teacher aside who you've seen struggling today and check in on them. Shyly try and make friends, everyone is so intimidating!

It is time for the staff meeting. What will you be doing? Trying to hold your tongue, most of this meeting is just namby-pamby nonsense. Running the meeting. It is important everyone knows you are ready to step up! Saying you need to use the bathroom, but you take your phone with you so you can kill 30 minutes. Sitting with your feet up at the back. This isn't really your jam. Listening carefully, these meetings are important! Sharing your concerns about some of the issues students are having and the pressures leadership and admin are putting on teachers. Someone has to say something! Sitting in the corner so you can stare at the new teacher. Sitting in the back and judging everyone. Trying not to cry as leadership share some new, out-of-the-blue deadlines. Giving a presentation on how well the school event you managed went. You love sharing wins!

Tomorrow is a school holiday. How will you spend your day off? Practicing my Tiktok dances. Catching up on work (and maybe if there is time for it, a mental breakdown). Sitting in my classroom. Teachers these days are lazy! Coaching a sports game. It brings me such joy to watch them... Going to job interviews. Hosting a multi-level marketing party for my essential oils side hustle. Calling my mom to tell her how brave you were this week. Taking part in the union-organised protest for better wages. Looking over some research papers so leadership will leave you alone because they're wrong. They're always wrong. Enjoying my weekend relaxing and knitting. Life is just so good being me.
